PRIME MINISTER-ELECT CALLS IN AT THE OAKTREE

Friday June 28, 2019
aving an ex-mayor visit the Oaktree Arena has been a daily custom for Debbie Hancock and her equally hard-working hospitality assistant Rhiannon Parsons, for landowner Bill Hancock, who has just stepped down after a two year stint as Mayor of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge, has made a habit of dropping by to check on how the dynamic duo are faring.

But on Friday it was the ex-mayor of London and Prime Ministerial front runner Boris Johnson who was surveilling the impressive venue that hosts Somerset Speedway, as part of the south west hustings for the Conservative Party leader elections, that will see the next Prime Minister appointed.
Debbie Hancock commented "I was astounded when I received a call on Tuesday asking if the Oaktree would be available for a function on Friday lunchtime. At first the information I was given was all very secretive but I always claim that we can be as flexible as needed here at the Oaktree and although we had the British Sidecar Speedway championships to prepare for in the evening, the clubhouse was available so I was happy to take the booking. When it became clearer that we would be hosting the likely future Prime Minister I was over-the-moon. We are not just about speedway here at the Oaktree, we are a lot more than that!"
Over 200 Conservative party members attended the event, including Elliott Withers, boss of one of the Somerset Rebels loyal sponsors, Salt Express.

Debbie Hancock added "Unfortunately, due to a busy schedule it was not possible to persuade Boris, who after all loves a bike ride, to stay around and enjoy our evening's Sidecar action, but he did take a keen interest in what goes on here at the Oaktree Arena. He confessed to me however, that he had never been to a speedway meeting. Nevertheless I don't suppose there are many speedway venues that have hosted a future Prime Minister on a raceday!"
