Somerset star Todd Kurtz led by example as stand-in captain for the Rebels, dropping just one point to a Plymouth opponent as a 46-44 challenge fixture was battled out at the Oaktree Arena on Wednesday night.
The only defeat that Kurtz suffered came in his fourth ride of a meeting that was pushed through at pace amidst fears of some worsening weather and he admitted, "I was just pleased to get out there and back on a bike. I haven't had any meetings for a few weeks now so to be able put in some laps and score some points was great. It went quite quickly but we had to get a move on to avoid the bad weather which we managed and we picked up the win too."

In his opening ride Kurtz was partnered to a 5-1 by Oaktree debutant Nicolas Vicentin, who certainly lived up to the high recommendation offered from resident Rebel Nico Covatti. Indeed, Vicentin was well on course to complete a paid maximum until an unprovoked loss of line saw him hurtling across the track towards the pits turn fence in heat 10.

His performance earned considerable praise from team manager Garry May who said "Nicolas was as exciting as Nico had told me he was. He quickly adapted to the Oaktree and looked good, just as young Zack [Cook] did. When you think he only touched down in the UK from Australia on Tuesday Zack really settled into the racing groove fast and picking up two wins on the night was a boost for him. It's certainly worth keeping a watchful eye on both of these."

The Rebels had to fend off a late recovery from the Gladiators after establishing a mid-meeting eight point advantage. Anders Rowe expertly held out against a tactical substitute ride from the more experienced Ben Barker, drafted in for the evening by the Plymouth side, in heat nine and then Rowe put Ben Wilson under immense pressure in the twelfth heat.

Barker's defeat of Kurtz came in heat 13 as Rebel's Aussie had to work hard to get by Nathan Stoneman to crucially restrict the visitors to a 4-2 advantage as they closed in to a 41-37 score line. A battling ride from Cradley's Luke Harris for Somerset supported Cook's emphatic second UK win and that ensured the win on the night for the Rebels who needed that cushion as Barker and Stoneman rallied over the new imports of Cook and Vicentin in the final race of an entertaining meeting.
