Ipswich’s Foxhall Stadium has never been a happy hunting ground for the Somerset, the Rebels having claimed but one victory in 11 previous visits to the Suffolk track, and tonight was to prove no different with Somerset going down by 18 points on the night with the meeting being abandoned after 12 heats due to fog.

In truth, Somerset never really got into the match, a fall and exclusion for their number 1 Josh Grajczonek when in 2nd place set the tone for the Rebels, who quickly found themselves 10 points in arrears after just 3 heats.

Although the Rebels ‘steadied the ship’ somewhat after that, the Witches were always in command, Somerset’s only highlights being heat wins for Grajczonek, it marking his 100th race win in Rebels colours, and Richie Worrall before Brady Kurtz and Paul Starke combined for a maximum 5-1 race advantage in heat 12, which ultimately proved to be the last action of the night as fog enveloped the stadium.

The match was Somerset’s last away fixture in their League Cup group, leaving them with 3 home group meetings to complete, starting with the visit of Rye House to the Oaktree Arena tomorrow (Friday 10th) night.

“This wasn’t the best of nights for us,” said Rebels team manager Garry May afterwards, “we were on the back foot right from heat 1 and by the time we had re-grouped, Ipswich had built up a big lead which we were always struggling to close down.”

“Now that we have completed our away group fixtures, we must ensure that we win our three remaining home matches without the opposition taking anything away with them points-wise to make sure that we are in with a shout of qualifying for the semi-final stages of the competition.”
